The Irish Hannah's
"In Ulster, during the Plantations of Charles 1, the Commonwealth and Charles II, many families from Galloway crossed over the narrow strait between the Rhinns of Galloway and Larne. All over Ulster they were given land and took over control of the County from the Irish natives becoming the forerunners of today's "Scotch Irish", the Ulstermen. Of similar Celtic background but industrious and fiercely Protestant they drove the Catholic Irish out and held Ulster for the Protestant succession." This accounts for the rabid loyalty of our clan Hannah to the Orange Lodge.
Where in Ireland did the Family come from? Francis' obituary states that they came from County Donegal but where in Donegal? My only clue was Gordon's recollection that Uncle Lew said that the name he remembered hearing was sic Tullyfin or Tillyfin. There is a Tullyfin in County Caven but in Irish standards it is a long way from Donegal. However, on a parish map of County Donegal there is an area called Tullyfern (fig. 1). Given the tenuousness of the recollection it is probably the best we can do. I have spent a lot of time in Ireland going over the existing records and it is not promising. First of all our family was Protestant and the only good records were kept by the Roman Catholic church. Secondly, a lot of records were destroyed over the years and pre 1850 land records do not exist any more for a lot of areas.
