AUSTRALIA
Hanna Street, Melbourne, was named after Patrick Hanna, M.P.
(1820-1888). He built bridges and operated the first Ferry across the
river Yarra.

IRELAND
Hanna's Close Just north of Kilkeel, County Down,
Ireland, about a half hour outside of Newry. This farm group of cottages
(established in 1842 by four Hanna families seeking religious freedom from
Scotland) that have been preserved and turned into the most delightful tourist
cottages. People have stayed there and found it enchanting. A
pilgrimage for any Hanna in an area strewn with Hanna descendants. Highly
recommended.
The Hannas took part in the Ulster plantation of the 1600s. The
main Irish branch was the Hannas of Newry, County Down.
In the Square in Belfast stood the statue of the Rev. Hugh Hanna, D.D., until it was blown up. (I.R.A.)
SCOTLAND
SORBIE TOWER
The Old Place of Sorbie, is located 7 miles south of Wigton on the
Sorbie - Garliestown Road, and it was the stronghold of the Hannays of
Sorbie until the mid 17th century.
WIGTON
Closely associated with the Hannays of Sorbie, Kirkdale, Capenoch,
and Knockglas, who provided the town with Provosts, Bailies, and
Burgesses through the years. Provost, William Ahannay, built a
fortified house with Battlements near the Mercate Cross in 2549.
WHITHORN - Candida Casa
Fynlaw Ahanna was Canon of Whithorn in 1390, and in 1530 Ninian
Ahannay.
OLD PLACE OF BROUGHTON
(site) 1.5 miles from Sorbie, was the seat of the Murray Clan who
were at feud with the Hannay Clan. The Hannays besieged it in 1599.
RIVER CREE
On the 16th of December, 1610, Patrick Ahannay of
Kirkdale, a Provost of Wigton, was killed in a skirmish with the
Kennedies of Blairguhan at Cruives of Cree
SORBIE OLD KIRK
Many Hannas, Hannahs, Hannays are buried here. It is situated in
Sorbie Village.
KIRKDALE
(pronounced "Kirdale") Lies between Creetown and
Gatehouse of Fleet and has been the family seat of the Hannays of
Kirkdale since 1532. The present Laird is, "Major R.W. Rainsford
Hannay of Kirkdale and of That Ilk". Kirkdale House is a splendid
granite building designed by Adam.
KIRKDALE OLD KIRK
The burial ground of the Hannays including Sir Samuel Hannay, 3rd
Baronet of Mochrum and Kirkdale.
RUSCO CASTLE
Near Gatehouse of Fleet, was a Hannay possession from 1786 for
close to a hundred years.
CRUGGLETON CHURCH
Another Hanna burial ground and also contains Heraldic Burial Stone
within the Church.
KELTON CHURCHYARD
Near Castle Douglas, contains the Heraldic Gravestone of the
Hannays of Lochbank.
KINGSMUIR ESTATE
Near Crail in Fife, has been the Family Seat of Hannays of
Kingsmuir since about 1700. This branch of the family is represented
by the late Mrs. Marjorie Playfair Hannay, Little Baltilly, Ceres,
Fife.
THE TOMB OF MAY OF CASTLECARY
Near Greenhill, Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire; is the burial ground of
a branch of the Hannah Clan who settled in the Falkirk area in the
1640s. They were descendants of Dr. James Hanna, Dean of Edinburgh, at
whom Jenny Geddes threw her stool in 1637. His descendants include the
Hannahs of Leith, a seafaring family, whose arms are as Sorbie but
differenced by a Tower between two galleys on a red chief.
EDINBURGH
St. Giles' Cathedral contains a memorial tablet to Dr. James Hanna,
Dean of Edinburgh, at whom Jenny Geddes threw her stool. The stool is
still preserved in the National Museum of Antiquities, Queen Street,
Edinburgh. His wife was buried in Holyrood Abby in 1674
Outside St. Giles' in the High Street in 1526 the Ahannays, along
with the Kennedies, took part in a street battle. In October 1685,
William Hannay, a Convenanter, and his son, were imprisoned in the
Tolbooth. The son, aged 16, was tortured with thumbikins and loaded
with irons.
Jingling Geordie or George Heriot was King James VI's Goldsmith and
was also connected with the Hannays. His sister, Sybella, married
Andrew Hannay, the Younger of Sorbie; and his stepmother Christine Bla
married Andrew's brother, John Hannay. Heriot founded the famous
George Heriot's school in Edinburgh.
During the 16th and 17th centuries many
Hannays were Burgesses of the Canongate and Edinburgh.
USA
HANNA'S TOWN, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania
Founded by Robert Hanna, Esq., in 1769, the town
was a settlement of Scot/Irish on the "wild frontier".
It was also the County Seat and Robert Hanna was a
Justice, Real-Estator, Farmer, Tavern Owner, and a
Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion on Light
Horse Cavalry (Light Dragoons would be a more proper
term). Robert Hanna, Esq. Served as a Deputy to the
Provincial Convention held at Philadelphia, PA, July
15, 1774. The County Seat, Hanna's Town, was the scene
of military activity, drills, and musters for numerous
Battalions, Companies, and the 8th Pennsylvania
Regiment.
The "Hanna's Town Resolves" were signed here on May 16, 1775. The
town paid dearly for its patriotism when a raiding party of over 250 Indians,
Tories, and Soldiers of the 8th Regiment of Foot serving the British
Army. The town was attacked, burned, and looted on July 13, 1786. (Historical
Reconstruction is in process.)
HANNAH BRIDGE (covered), Linn County, Oregon
In 1853, John Joseph Hannah arrived by wagon train and was granted a 151-acre tract of land bound by Thomas Creek and Bilyeu Creek. Hannah built one of the first sawmills in the area, powered with water from Bilyeu Creek.
HANNAHSTOWN, Butler County, Pennsylvania
On Route 356 in Winfield Township. A brick structure still stands
and was built by Nathan Skeer, soon after he and Abraham Maxwell
founded the town in 1829. They decided to name it after a daring early
settler named Mr. Hannah.
HANNA HALL, Green County, Pennsylvania.
The first building to be built on the Waysburg College Campus and
is still standing. It was constructed of brick in 1851.
HANNASTOWN, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania
Located very near Old Hanna's Town of Revolutionary War fame, but
having a Post Office. Both of these towns are located to the north of
Greensburg, PA. There were some volunteers that joined the Black Watch
of Scotland in World War II, from Hanna's Town.
HANNA'S RUN, (Creek), Westmoreland County, PA
Flows close to Ligonier and the Old Fort there.
HANNAHS TOWN in Old Allegheny County, PA
On an ancient map in the Courthouse at Pittsburgh,
PA under Warrant to Alexander Hannah in 1786, when
Allegheny County was still Westmoreland County (nothing
remains except the map).
HANNATOWN, GA.
Located on the Florida/Georgia line. Local cemetery
have the towns namesake ( John Burrell Hanna ) and
decendants.
HANNAH MOUNTAIN, SE Tennessee

HANNAH , North Dakota.
This praire town celebrated it's 100th birthday in 1996. The town was founded by Francis Hannah who emmigrated to the Dakota Territory from Mantioulin Island, Ontario, Canada.
HANNA WAREHOUSE, Oil City, PA
Owned by the River Boat Captains and owner of the fleet of
"Allegheny Belles", that were four of the largest riverboats
of the century. They were famous from New York to the Mississippi as
far as New Orleans and up to the waters of the Missouri. The warehouse
was owned by Captains John and William Hanna.
HANNA-SMALL-WHITE HOUSE, Mercer County, Mercer, PA
Was constructed (brick), in 1839 by Robert Hanna.
Another Hanna house stands next to it and was built
in 1818. Both are in the 200 block of South Pitt Street.
Robert Hanna's daughter, Mary Hanna, married Edward
Small, an abolitionist minister of the United Presbyterian
Church and operated an underground "Railroad"
for escaped slaves from the sough during the Civil
War between the states. There was a secret room found
under the floor of the kitchen some years later. The
houses still stand today.
HANNA PARK, Mayport Naval Station, FL
The Kathryn Abby Hanna Park on the Atlantic Ocean side. The park is
on Wonderwood Road at the South Boundary of the Mayport Naval Station.
